Biography
Matthias Ludovicus Joannes Lemaire was born in 1891 and established the “Galerie Lemaire” in Amsterdam in 1933. From the outset, Lemaire focused upon art and handcraft from countries beyond the borders of Europe. Matthias Ludovicus Johannes Lemaire died in 1979. Currently (2020), “Galerie Lemaire” is run by Lemaire’s niece, Finette Lemaire. Between 1962 and 1985, the Galerie Lemaire sold over 100 artefacts and objects to the ethnological collection of the Museum Natur und Mensch. The objects are from the Americas (approx. 10 objects), the Islands of Oceania (over 30 objects), as well as from countries in Africa (over 20 objects) and Asia (40 objects).
