A large part of the geoscientific collections of the Museum Natur und Mensch consists of regional finds. However, since the museum's foundation in 1895, it has also repeatedly received valuable donations from private individuals. These objects - both individual pieces and entire collections - hail in part from internationally renowned sites. This large amethyst druse from Brazil weighing approx. 120 kg from the world-famous Rio Grande do Sul site is a good example. It was sawn open in the centre transversally, revealing the multitude of individual crystals of different sizes, which had grown into the hollow space. This exquisite display object is one of the latest additions to the museum's international collection of gemstones.
