About the object
Along with stone and iron, copper – as a surface for painting – is particularly resistant to pest infestation. It also has other positive properties for painting. The portrait miniature of the young gentleman wearing an allonge wig is painted with a fine brush on copper. The sitter stands out against the black background to great effect.
