About the object
The apostle in question here is Paul, which according to New Testament, together with Peter is considered to be Jesus' successor and founder of the Christian Church. His attribute is the book, which symbolises his role as mediator of the Word of God. The design for the apostle figure, so-called bozzetto, was intended for a sculpture for the high altar in Kirchhofen near Staufen. It was placed to the side of the central altar and would have been sculpted more elaborately.
