Carving

In Germany, customs and nature conservation authorities monitor trade in protected animal and plant species and their products. This also includes ivory, e.g. elephant and hippo tusks. In 1998, the Subordinate Nature Conservation Authority of the City of Freiburg handed over 42 ivory objects to the museum for safekeeping. These items had previously been confiscated by customs and thus withdrawn from illegal trade.
