Utagawa Kunisada

The two fighters are the protagonists of a Kabuki production from 1816. They are preparing for a life-and-death duel at night. The duels - which are called sayaate - form the climax of many plays and are accompanied by theatrical music and performed by the actors using dramatic movements.
