About the object
Seven swords are aimed at the Virgin Mary and symbolise the "Seven Sorrows" inflicted upon her: Presentation of Jesus at the Temple, Flight to Egypt, Loss of the child Jesus in the Temple, encounter with Jesus on the Via Dolorosa, the Crucifixion of Jesus on Mount Calvary, Descent from the Cross, Burial of Jesus. The painting was part of the former stained glass window of the Freiburg Charterhouse.
