Twin figure, 1900 - 1980
This Ibeji figure probably comes from the Ila region in northern Yorubaland (Kwara State). Typical features for figures from this area include: a carved Islamic triangle on the chest (here an additional one on the back), the cap pulled over the ears and, in male figures, a pronounced penis. The cap has been dyed with washing or laundry blue. This blue hue is still vivid especially on the back, where there is evidence of insect damage.
