Citizens' armies were formed for national defence from 1789 onwards, including in Baden, to counter the revolutionary troops advancing across the Rhine. The three figures show members of the Freiburg citizen’s infantry, the artillery and the equestrian corps. The "pompiercorps", the first organised Freiburg fire brigade, was formed from the citizen’s army.
