About the object
In 1848 the black-red-gold flag became a symbol of political unity for the supporters of a free German national state. After the revolution had failed, the Prussian king forbade these flag colours. Black and red remained; gold was replaced by white. The colours black-red-gold were restored when the Federal Republic of Germany was founded.
