Johann Baptist Kirner
The children’s defence force – scene from the Italian Revolution, 1848
About the object
Eleven years after Kirner left Italy, he created this painting in his Munich atelier in 1848. Kirner takes up motifs from his time in Italy and lets the horde of children in ragged clothes parade in front of a picturesque coastal landscape. The differentiated clothing may be a reference to the different life paths that the children will follow during their lives.
