About the object
In addition to preparatory sketches, Kirner also made a small-format sketch in oils for the painting Jagdpartie (Hunting Party). In this instance, he uses deft brushstrokes to test the tonal composition of greens and browns, against which the red hues of the fire provide a complementary contrast. The sketch in oils was made after the pencil drawing and before the pen and ink drawing.
