Johann Baptist Kirner
Children at play, 1838
About the object
A young shepherd on all fours makes himself available as a mount for a little girl, while a young woman restrains the shepherd with reins and a riding crop. Kirner considered the idyllic Italian landscape an ideal setting in which to depict the carefree play of children. The painting may have served as a wedding present for an architect friend. Numerous reproductions and copies attest to the popularity of the motif.
