The small-format paintings are sketches for larger altar works. Sketches in oils of this kind were made so that clients could get an overall idea of ?? the shape and colour palette of the work. The visitation shows the encounter between Mary and Elisabeth, which is described in the gospel of Luke. The second painting depicts Mary distributing rosaries to saints of the Dominican order.
