St Dominic receiving the Rosary from Mary, um 1750 - 55
About the object
In this small-format painting, we see the Virgin Mary distributing rosaries to the saints of the Dominican Order. The founder of the order, Dominic, and St Catherine of Siena are depicted as the recipients of the rosaries beneath Mary, who is enthroned above the group of figures with the Christ Child in her lap. Compositionally, the painting is based on a type derived from Roman High Baroque.
