Simon Göser

The Supper in the House of Simon, 1772

About the object

The painting is a sketch for a ceiling painting, which was carried out in the Fürstensaal of the monastery of St Peter in the High Black Forest. It portrays the events that took place when Jesus visited the house of Simon of Bethany. In this instance, Göser - one of the outstanding baroque painters in southern Germany - guides the viewer's gaze along a vertical axis. Because it had been conceived as a ceiling painting, the work creates the illusion of space opening up above it. As though we are looking through a dark curtain, the painting frees up our view of this scene from the New Testament.
