About the object
In this instance, the centuries-old, traditional Chilkat art of weaving and the COVID-19 pandemic converge. Her face mask termed “Chilkat Protector”, made by the Tlingit artist Lily Hope from Juneau, is an artistic and historical witness to the response to the global pandemic as well as a symbol of indigenous resistance: "In the future people will know we were here, we took care of each other, we survived."
