Glove puppet | Chi Wara

The stick puppet shows a mother and child on a roan antelope (Hippotragus equinus). On her back are two chi wara, mythical hybrid antelope creatures. During the 1980s and 1990s, the collector Karl Krieg documented the material culture in Mali and created a comprehensive collection of stick puppets, which points to the importance of this unique, performative spectacle as a cultural heritage of the Bamana.
