About the object
Johann Baptist Kirner became renowned via the visual motif Ein Schweizer Gardist erzählt (A Swiss Guardsman Regales his Audience with Tales). Reproductions played a vital role in dissemination of the motif throughout Europe. The sideways-on aquatint by the Swiss artist, Franz Hegi was published in Zurich and is titled in two languages. The lavish colouring is aimed at a sophisticated audience.
