Hendrick Goltzius

Goltzius was a great admirer of the Italian masters. The style of the introductory print in the Master Engravings series adopts that of his role models: he uses a wide range of greys and shading to achieve an almost painterly effect. The dedicatory inscription formulates the series' underlying theme: to showcase the artist's ability to transform.
