Hendrick Goltzius
Pan chases the nymph Syrinx, 1589
About the object
Fleeing from the god Pan, the nymph Syrinx turns into a reed. Ovid tells the story of the nymph's transformation with reference to Mercury playing his flute on the reed, which he uses to put his opponent Argus to sleep. Goltzius' challenge was to visualise Ovid's complex internal narratives.
