Grille
Grille from the Adelhausen convent, 19. Jahrhundert
About the object
The convent was a strict, enclosed religious order. The nuns were only allowed to leave their cells in exceptional cases and were not allowed to receive visitors. In order to preserve seclusion from the world on the one hand, yet enable contact with the outside world on the other, »speech windows« or grilles were installed. Under the supervision of a specially appointed sister, the so-called »listener«, the nuns were thus able to talk to visitors.
