Chalice with symbols of the Passion, um 1600

About the object

The net-like, intricate silver decoration has been placed on the otherwise entirely smooth and gilded surface of the chalice, creating a dynamic contrast The design dispenses the considerably more expensive repoussé metalworking technique. The marks of Christ's Passion are depicted on the base. The monograms of Jesus (IHS) and Mary (MRA) and a heart pierced by three nails adorn the cup.
