About the object

The pair were Catholics from Hotzenwald in the southern Black Forest. They were concerned about losing their local independence in the light of the political changes. Their traditional “tracht” clothing was an expression of their regional feeling of belonging. The people of Hotzenwald did not recognise the Protestant Grand Duke as the sovereign and gave shelter to the revolutionaries.
