From 1991 to 1993, the natural history team carried out official fossil excavations in Hegau for the first time. The head of the excavation and volunteer was the late Werner Stumpf, who preserved over 150 leaf fossils after successful excavations involving months of work. Even after almost 14 million years, the "carbonised" leaves from the Miocene are still as filigree as if they had only recently fallen from the trees.
