Frauenmaske "sivirit"

About the object

The Baining people, who live in the interior of the Gazelle Peninsula of New Britain, make impressive barkcloth masks. They are worn at ceremonies and during dance performances. The mask type »sivirit« is worn in performances by women, while other masks are used by men during fire dances by night.
