About the object
The menfolk of the Abelam people, who live in the area of the great Sepik River, cultivate enormous yam tubers. The yams are not intended for consumption, but only for ceremonial purposes. At harvest time, the yams are decorated with masks of this kind and displayed. They are then considered to be living beings.
