Kirner’s Swiss guardsman was very well received among his contemporaries. The painting was often copied and helped to extend Kirner’s reputation, not only to the remotest corners of Germany, but also far beyond national borders. It enabled the young artist to achieve his breakthrough as a sought-after genre painter.
