Johann Baptist Kirner
Italian children at play with dog, 1858
About the object
In the 19th century, children and childhood were effectively rediscovered. For a long time before that, nine to eleven-year-olds were dismissed as diminutive adults, far too small to be acknowledged. In the interim, they had become worthy subjects as persons in their own right and were placed in an emotional relationship to their environment. In Kirner's works, they often became the focus of attention and the sole motif.
