Italian pilgrims, resting in front of a painting of the Virgin Mary (near Cervara), 1834
The work shows that Kirner explored new artistic paths in Italy, both in terms of motif and colour. Although actually a quiet prayer, it is portrayed here as a dense, lively genre scene in the open air - colourful and flooded with light. In 1834 the painter sent the painting from Rome to Munich where it was very well received.
