Svenja Kreh

Portrait, 2001

About the object

Svenja Kreh's »self-portrait« looks almost abstract, the face at its centre is barely recognisable as such. This painting was made by Kreh, who was born in Stuttgart in 1968, during an artist-in-residency stay in Namibia and can also be seen as a kind of landscape. The dearth of colour was due here to a lack of materials, but primarily it is a stylistic device: for Kreh, forgoing colour is a way of moving away from a representation of reality toward other points of reference via a »spiritual vision« (Kreh).
