Entrance Gate to the Yūshōin Tomb of the Zōjōji Temple, Tokyo, 1860 - 1880
About the object
This building enshrined the tomb of the seventh Tokugawa shōgun Ietsugu (1709-1716). The entrance, with its pillars carved with dragons, became famous as the Chokugakumon Gate. Emperor Nakamikado (1702-1737) inscribed a plaque with the name of the tomb Yūshōin under the curved tile roof. An elaborately-constructed bell tower (shōrō) is visible on the right. The buildings were destroyed in the earthquake and fire of 1923.
