About the object
The nine people in the photo were considered the last survivors of the original 3,000 to 5,000 Tasmanian Aborigines, who were uprooted and annihilated as a result of their contact with European colonisers from 1803 onwards. The photograph was taken after their deportation in 1847 to the Oyster Cove convict colony in Tasmania.
