Imperial Palace of Kyoto, 1860 - 1880
About the object
This is the inner wall and gate of the Imperial Palace in Kyoto, which was the emperor’s residence for almost a millennium until he moved to the newly renamed Imperial Palace in Tokyo in 1868. This photograph may just as well have been taken today, as the location’s structure has remained unchanged. Nowadays, people stroll and cycle on the road past this gate, but entering the gate is just as difficult now as it would have been at the time this photograph was taken.
