Monks by Gate of Zōjōji Temple, Tokyo, 1880 - 1920
About the object
Due to the close connections to the ruling Tokugawa clan, the Zōjōji Temple was well funded with numerous monks and year-round rituals for deceased Shōgun rulers. With the new Meiji regime and consequent loss of sponsorship, the temple faced difficulties and the number of resident monks was significantly reduced.
