Nachi Waterfall, 1860 - 1880
About the object
At 133 metres, the Nachi Waterfall is the tallest single-drop waterfall in Japan. This site has deep connections with several Japanese religions, including Shinto, Buddhism and the mountain ascetic monks, known as the Yamabushi. Many suicides, including despondent lovers, have leapt from the top of the waterfall in the belief that they will be reborn into the Buddhist paradise.
