Shopping Street in Yokohama, 1871 - 1900
About the object
This busy shopping street in Yokohama, one of the few cities where foreigners were allowed in the 1860s, is full of shops catering to both foreign and domestic customers. Fittingly, the shop signs are written in both Japanese and English. On the left side, we see, for example, a kimono store with its sign in Japanese and English-language signs, saying: “M. Iseya, Gold & Silver work” and “Fujita Lacquer Ware”.
