About the object

The Sāmoan woman pictured was possibly photographed by John Davis in his studio in Matafele, Apia. She is wearing a sei and a selu tuiga in her pinned-up hair. Her neck is adorned with a lau maile. Although she has not been identified, she may be a taupou as indicated by the ceremonial comb, unless the photograph has been staged to exhibit taupou attire. While her torso is wrapped in a siapo mamanu, her torso is uncovered.
