About the object
A pilgrim who, according to the German and Japanese inscriptions, was an adherent of the Fujikō religion, which focused on the reverence of Mount Fuji and its deities. He is depicted holding a wooden donation box, marked with the character for money. Such pilgrims of various religious persuasions were a common sight on public streets.
