About the object
The Sensōji Temple in Tokyo is the oldest temple in the city, having been founded in the seventeenth century. It is dedicated to the deity Kannon and features a five-storey pagoda. It was also a popular entertainment centre and, according to Chamberlain’s guidebook from 1893, it was notable for its many inexpensive photography studios.
