Country Road, 1860 - 1880

About the object

A country road winding past mighty trees on the way to the Nikkō Tōshōgū Shrine. Cedar trees can be seen to the left, their trunks marked with parallel furrows. The cedar, also called sugi or Cryptomeria japonica, is a soft, fast-growing tree that was often used in Japanese architecture and in the construction of everyday objects, such as storage boxes.
