Gate of Zōjōji Temple, Tokyo, 1880 - 1920
About the object
This inner gate of the Zōjōji Temple pictured here was consumed by fire during World War II, as, indeed, were almost all of the other buildings in the temple complex. The main gate of the temple, the Sangedatsumon dating from 1622, survived the war and is currently the oldest wooden building in Tokyo.
