Depicted here is a procession of firefighters wearing the heavy coats of their profession. These were doused with water before approaching fire, giving them a certain level of protection. They are holding special tools used to demolish houses – instead of hosing buildings with water (as in the West), Japanese firefighters would mainly demolish houses in order to prevent fires from spreading.
