Although the samurai class was disbanded by the Meiji government in 1868, there was a strong demand for images of samurai, partly fuelled by their depictions on myriad woodblock prints. As such, elaborate recreations of the samurai, using available weapons and armour, were staged by photographers, as seen in this image.
