Kaiser-Wilhelm-Platz with the victory monument, nach 1876

About the object

After the victory over France in 1871, money was collected throughout Baden for a monument that was to be located in Freiburg. With the installation of the victory monument on October 3, 1876, at which the monarch was present, the square in front of the Karlkaserne was named "Kaiser-Wilhelm-Platz". The name never caught on - people always spoke of the "Siegesdenkmal" - today the square is called "Europaplatz". On the corner of today's Habsburger Straße stands the Meriansche Haus, a major work of Baden neo classicism.
