Mount Atago with Atago-jinja Shrine, Tokyo, 1880 - 1920
About the object
The Atago Shrine was built by the order of the Shōgun Ieyasu in 1603 on the top of a hill, called Mount Atago. The high location was useful for identifying fire and accordingly the Shinto fire god is worshipped here. The stone stairs are famous, with the very steep “male” stairs (seen in the centre of the photo) and the more gradual “female” stairs (to the right).
