Mount Fuji Seen from the Tōkaidō Road, 1860 - 1880
About the object
A spectacular view of Mount Fuji from the Tōkaidō Road, which connected Edo with Kyoto, the ancient capital of Japan. It was a busy road that was usually travelled by foot, and, as we can see in this photograph, by jinrikisha carriages. The Tōkaidō Road provided a scenic view of the mountain, also from close-by Yokohama, where many photographers had their studios.
