Mochi rice cake is shown here being vigorously kneaded in the traditional manner by hammering the rice in a wooden receptacle. A New Year tradition, it is staged here in a specialised shop. As a mochi maker was probably an unfamiliar concept to the German writer, he or she has captioned the photograph as a ‘bakery’.
