Esaki Reiji
Road to Imaichi, 1884 - 1889
About the object
Imaichi, a town at the gateway to the Nikkō region, was notable for its inns. We can glimpse one of them through the avenue of mighty cedar trees. This image has been attributed to Esaki Reiji (1845-1910), a student of Shimooka Renjō, who established a highly successful studio in Tokyo. Esaki was the first Japanese photographer to use dry plate negatives.
