Stone Stairway at the Tōshōgū Shrine, 1880 - 1889
About the object
Comprising 207 steps, the stone stairway leads up to the spiritual centre of the shrine, the tomb of the shōgun Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543-1616). The stairway is surrounded by gigantic 600-year-old cedars. The photo is attributed to the Italian photographer Adolfo Farsari (1841-1898), who owned a photographic studio in Yokohama.
